On visits to Aotearoa/New Zealand as a family, first in 1991, we were powerfully influenced by the (then) new integrated Maori/English Prayerbook of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. Later, in 2000, on a three-month visit and parish exchange, I was able to do some preliminary study at St. John’s College, Auckland.
On returning to Britain, I continued that studying, and in 2003 I gained an MA (Master of Arts) in Christian Spirituality at the University of London’s Heythrop College.
My main thesis was on Maori & Celtic Christian Spirituality. I’m not sure at one level that Heythrop is the best place to study that subject as my main thesis: being at the antipodes of NZ, not many lecturers knew much of Maori spirituality; and as a Jesuit-founded college, they hate Celtic theology! Having said that, there is much more to the course than just those two themes.
